Lauren’s story

Lauren was 12 years into her career in care when she fled domestic violence with her son. She had to reduce her hours at work and was living in temporary accommodation. Lauren was supported by her local council in finding a permanent property a few miles away from her son’s school.  However, the property was unfurnished and the floorboards were bare.

For Lauren, it was important to transform her flat from a shell into a somewhere she and her son could begin making new memories together. She completed a grant search on the Turn2Us website and was signposted to The Care Workers Charity. After completing an application, we awarded Lauren a grant to pay for the installation of carpets.

“The new carpet was the icing on the cake after we managed to find a new place so soon after moving out. Our home is a safe place and a castle that my son and I have so much pride in”.

We invited Lauren to speak at our Champion’s conference in March because she wanted to empower other care sector employees to learn from her experience and encourage employers to spot signs in the workplace. Her passion for The Care Worker’s Charity’s cause shone throughout her speech.
